We've had a bat box scheme at Carsington for 23 years and this year 17% of the boxes had bats in at the time of the survey
- 15 noctules
- 2 pipistrelle sp.
- 1 bat sp.
39% of the 20 or so boxes had evidence of bats using them in the past year.
We also check the Ice House on the slopes of the reservoir and this year was only the second time we found four bats present. A tiny hibernation site with only enough room for 3 people to enter at a time, this hibernation site support Natterer's and brown long-eared bats. In 2013 we added some bat boxes to the walls of the ice house to increase the number of crevices available.
