November results are in from my winter bat activity survey in my South Derbyshire garden. Bats were detected on 26 nights with three species/species groups over the month. Only the four cold nights towards the end of the month were bat-less but they re-appeared as soon as things turned slightly milder again.
Common pipistrelles were by far the most frequent, on the wing during 24 nights with social calls noted on 15 nights, and feeding buzzes on 9 nights showing that they were still foraging. The times when bats were recorded showed interesting patterns. All Myotis passes were before midnight while common pipistrelles showed three distinct peaks of activity, the last just before dawn.
